Polishing marble and removing dull spots – how to make marble shine again

Oct 23, 2026Dario Zanutta

Short answer: how to make marble shine again depends on the damage. Slightly dull, worn floors are refreshed with UR 11 Floor Care (cleans, cares and shines in one step). Polished tables and worktops are cared for with SW 46 Stone Wax. Dull etch marks from acid (lemon, vinegar, wine, limescale remover) and heavily worn floors are re-polished with KP 30 Crystallisation Powder and a single-disc machine – ideally by a professional.

What is the difference between a stain and a dull spot?

A stain is something that has penetrated the stone – oil, wine, rust. It is usually dark or coloured. A dull spot is lighter and rough: here an acid has dissolved the polished surface. Cleaning doesn't help – the surface has to be re-polished.

Which method for which condition?

Condition Solution
Floor slightly dull, worn, gone matt UR 11 Floor Care (self-shine, slip-resistant)
Refreshing polished tables, window sills, worktops SW 46 Stone Wax
Dull etch marks, heavily worn traffic lanes, floor completely dull Crystallisation with KP 30
Deep scratches, uneven surface Grinding and re-polishing – professional service

Refreshing a worn marble floor (UR 11)

  1. For regular cleaning, 2–4 dl UR 11 per 10 L of lukewarm water.
  2. For dull, matt areas, diluted 1:1 with water or undiluted.
  3. Apply, e.g. with the RG 913 Microfibre System, leave to act and dry. Do not walk on it while drying.

A silky, slip-resistant protective film forms and builds up with each application.

Caring for polished surfaces with stone wax (SW 46)

  1. Clean the surface and let it dry completely.
  2. Apply SW 46 undiluted and sparingly with a soft cloth and massage it in.
  3. Let it dry and buff until the desired shine is achieved.

Crystallisation with KP 30 – how it works

Crystallisation compacts the surface of calcareous stone chemically and mechanically: the pores become tighter, the surface harder and more resistant, and the shine increases significantly.

  1. Clean the floor thoroughly with GR 75 and rinse well – residues prevent crystallisation.
  2. Cover furniture, skirting boards and walls. Wear gloves and safety goggles.
  3. Lightly pre-wet the floor, spread KP 30 evenly.
  4. Work with a single-disc machine and a white pad – approx. 3 minutes per m², in sections of max. approx. 5 m².
  5. Neutralise with plenty of water and vacuum up.

Coverage: approx. 15–25 g/m². The product must never dry on. Suitable for marble, limestone and calcareous engineered stone or terrazzo.

Avoiding dull spots

  • No acidic cleaners on marble – remove limescale acid-free with UR 27 (more: Removing limescale from marble).
  • Wipe up lemon, wine, vinegar and cola immediately.
  • Remove sand dry every day – it acts like sandpaper.

Frequently asked questions

Can I polish marble myself?

You can easily care for small areas yourself with SW 46. Crystallisation with KP 30 requires a single-disc machine and experience. For larger floors we recommend a professional.

How do I get a lemon mark out of marble?

A lemon mark is an etch mark, not dirt. It cannot be wiped away, only removed by re-polishing the surface, e.g. by crystallisation.

Does KP 30 also work on granite?

No. KP 30 is intended for calcareous stone such as marble, limestone and terrazzo.
