Cleaning and caring for granite – kitchen worktops, floors and stairs

Oct 23, 2026Dario Zanutta

Short answer: granite kitchen worktops are cleaned daily with the spray cleaner stone clear UR 25 (spray on, wipe with a soft cloth, streak-free). Lime rings at the sink are removed with UR 26 Limescale Remover. Granite floors are mopped with UR 15 (polished) or UR 14 (honed). Absorbent granite is protected by sealing with SI 88.

Granite is acid-resistant – but not stain-proof

Unlike marble, granite can usually tolerate acidic limescale removers. Depending on the type, however, it is more or less absorbent: light-coloured granites often absorb oil, wine or coffee faster than you'd think. And some granites (e.g. Serizzo, Cresciano) develop rust stains over time.

Guide: granite kitchen worktop

  1. Daily: spray on UR 25 and wipe with a dry, soft cloth, e.g. RG 960.
  2. For lime rings: knock off thick crusts with the blade scraper, spray on UR 26, leave briefly, wash off with a wet sponge. Wet non-acid-resistant joints with water beforehand.
  3. Occasionally: massage in SW 46 Stone Wax sparingly and buff.

Guide: granite floors and stairs

  1. Remove sand dry.
  2. 1–2 dl UR 15 (polished) or UR 14 (honed) per 10 L of water, wet-mop.
  3. Outdoors with cement haze or efflorescence: ZE77 (1:10, pre-wet joints, scrub, rinse thoroughly) – see Removing cement haze.

Frequently asked questions

Does granite need sealing?

For absorbent, especially light-coloured granite in the kitchen, it's worth it. Test: put a few drops of water on it – if the stone darkens after a few minutes, it is absorbent. Then seal with SI 88.

Can I clean granite with vinegar?

Granite itself usually tolerates acid, but joints and silicone don't always – and vinegar leaves a smell. UR 26 removes limescale more effectively.

How do I get an oil stain out of a granite worktop?

With OE 68 Oil and Stain Paste: apply approx. 3 mm, let dry for 12–24 h, remove, wash. Details: Removing oil stains.
