Cleaning and caring for cotto – treating terracotta floors properly

Oct 23, 2026Dario Zanutta

Short answer: cotto is cared for regularly with a natural-soap-based floor care such as stone clear UR 10 (1–2 dl per 10 L of water). For protection, cotto is waxed, e.g. with SB 45 Premium Wax: apply sparingly, let dry, buff by machine. If the floor is heavily soiled or has old care layers, start with a deep clean using GR 75.

What makes cotto special

Cotto (terracotta) is fired clay – very absorbent and open-pored. Unprotected, it quickly absorbs stains. Waxed and regularly cared for with natural soap, it develops a beautiful, silky patina.

Care in three stages

Stage When? Product
1. Deep cleaning Heavily soiled, old wax or care layers GR 75, for stubborn layers with GV 65
2. Protection After deep cleaning or on a new floor SB 45 Premium Wax
3. Maintenance Regularly UR 10 Floor Care

1. Deep cleaning with GR 75

  1. 0.5–2 L GR 75 to 10 L of water (5–20 %).
  2. Apply and leave for approx. 10 minutes.
  3. Scrub, vacuum or squeegee off the dirty water, wipe with clean water.
  4. Let the floor dry completely – e.g. with the RG 850 Air Mover.

2. Waxing cotto with SB 45

  1. Only treat clean, thoroughly dry floors.
  2. Apply SB 45 undiluted, sparingly and evenly with an applicator.
  3. Once dry, buff with a single-disc machine and polishing brush.

1 L is enough for approx. 10–20 m². Result: a discreet, long-lasting sheen, more intense colour and significantly less re-soiling. Dispose of soaked cloths in a metal tin (risk of spontaneous combustion).

3. Regular care with UR 10

  1. 1–2 dl UR 10 per 10 L of lukewarm water.
  2. Wet-mop, leave briefly, pick up the dirty water.

Best results with the RG 923 Multi-Fibre System. 10 L of solution is enough for approx. 80–120 m².

Frequently asked questions

Does cotto need to be waxed?

It's recommended: unprotected cotto is very absorbent and quickly takes on stains. Wax protects and refreshes the colour.

How do I remove stains from cotto?

Oil and grease stains with OE 68 Paste, wax, tar or bitumen with FE 61 Stain Remover.

Can I clean cotto with an ordinary all-purpose cleaner?

Better not: many all-purpose cleaners are too harsh for the wax layer. The natural soap in UR 10 cleans and cares at the same time.
