Die 7 häufigsten Fehler bei der Steinpflege – und wie Sie sie vermeiden

The 7 most common stone care mistakes – and how to avoid them

Oct 23, 2026Dario Zanutta

We see it every day on the job: much of the damage to natural stone floors is not caused by wear, but by well-meant yet wrong care. Here are the seven classics.

1. Vinegar, lemon or limescale remover on marble

Acidic household remedies dissolve limescale – and marble is limestone. The result is dull, rough patches. Better: UR 27 Acid-Free Marble Bathroom Cleaner for limescale on marble, limestone and travertine.

2. All-purpose cleaner with added shine

Many household cleaners leave layers of wax or polymer. Over time the floor turns grey, sticky and attracts dirt. Better: a floor care product matched to your stone – e.g. UR 15 for polished or UR 14 for honed floors. Remove old layers once with GR 75 Special Deep Cleaner.

3. Too much water, too much product

More doesn't help more. Overdosed cleaners leave residues, and too much water spreads dirt into the joints. Better: damp-mop with the RG 913 Microfibre System and stick to the dosage on the label.

4. The pressure washer as a cure-all

Too much pressure washes out joints and roughens soft stone – and algae still come back quickly. Better: treat green growth with AR 50 Algae and Moss Remover and use the pressure washer only for rinsing, at a distance.

5. Rubbing stains instead of drawing them out

Scrubbing oil stains with abrasive cleaner pushes them deeper into the stone and scratches the surface. Better: apply OE 68 Oil and Stain Paste and let it dry – it draws the stain out.

6. Sealing dirty or damp stone

The sealer locks the dirt in, or cannot penetrate at all if the stone is damp. Better: deep clean thoroughly first, let dry for at least 24 hours, then apply the right protection such as SI 86 Natural Stone Stain Stop or SB 56 Water Repellent.

7. No test patch

Every stone is unique. A product that works perfectly on one granite can change the colour of another. Better: always test new products in an inconspicuous spot first.

Bonus: safety first

Professional stone care products are effective – and some are strong. Wear gloves and safety goggles, ventilate well, never mix products and read the safety data sheet and technical data sheet before first use.
