Short answer: for everyday cleaning, porcelain stoneware is cleaned with a residue-free special cleaner such as stone clear UR 17 (1–2 dl per 10 L of water) and a microfibre mop. If the floor looks grey, it needs a deep clean with FF 74 (5–10 %, leave for 10 minutes, scrub, vacuum up). Against cement haze after laying, FP 78 helps. All-purpose cleaners with care additives often leave a film – and that's exactly what makes porcelain stoneware look grey.
Why porcelain stoneware turns grey or streaky
- Care films: soap and wax cleaners build up on the surface and trap dirt.
- Micropores: unglazed porcelain stoneware, especially polished or matt, has fine pores in which dirt becomes lodged.
- Cement haze: after laying, a thin film of grout often remains.

Guide: daily cleaning
- Remove dust and sand dry, e.g. with the RG 943 Dust Mop System.
- Add 1–2 dl UR 17 to 10 L of lukewarm water.
- Damp-mop the floor with the RG 913 Microfibre System. UR 17 dries quickly and leaves no residue.
Guide: deep cleaning with FF 74
- Mix the solution: 0.5–1 L FF 74 to 10 L of water (5–10 %).
- Apply and leave for approx. 10 minutes.
- Scrub – by hand with a pad or with a single-disc machine.
- Vacuum or squeegee off the dirty water, then wipe with clean water.
10 L of solution covers approx. 30–50 m². Wear protective gloves and safety goggles.
After cleaning: stain protection
Unglazed porcelain stoneware absorbs oil, wine or coffee more easily than many people think. Sealing with SI 84 makes it oil-, grease- and water-repellent. Full effect is reached after approx. 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my porcelain stoneware look streaky after cleaning?
Usually because of cleaner residue or too much care product. A residue-free cleaner such as UR 17 and a clean microfibre pad solve this. Existing films are removed by deep cleaning with FF 74.
Can I clean porcelain stoneware with vinegar?
Porcelain stoneware itself is usually acid-resistant, but cement grout isn't. Vinegar also does little against grey haze. A specialist cleaner is better.
How do I remove shoe scuffs or metal marks?
With the RG 950 Nanotec Pad – the problem-solver for hard-to-remove marks in the microporous surface.
Do I need to seal new porcelain stoneware?
For unglazed, polished or matt porcelain stoneware it is recommended, especially in kitchens and entrances. First remove cement haze (see Removing cement haze), then seal with SI 84.
